Rain Bird® Model 51 Spring and Spoon Adjustments
Optimum performance of the Rain Bird® Model 51 impact sprinkler is dependent
upon proper rotation speed. A sprinkler rotating too fast from an over tightened spring will have too many impact-arm beats per minute. The result is both an excessive amount of water
deposited near the head due to the number of times the arm interrupts the drive nozzle stream and shortening of the radius from the whip or curling action of the stream thrown by the range nozzle.
A rotation speed of 2.00 minutes, plus or minus 15 seconds is desired.
Sprinkler re-builders often over tension the arm spring to avoid the return of sprinklers for not rotating. Adjustment of the impact arm spring tension and spoon angle are
imperative to achieve proper rotation speed. The spring tension should be set first and then the spoon angle used to fine-tune the final rotation
speed. Following these step by step instructions the irrigation technician can optimize sprinkler performance.
